『Liquid Blue』に寄せる想い　by　ケイ 赤城

『リキッド・ブルー』は、私がこれまで発表してきた中で最も個人的な作品です。オハイオ州クリーブランドで過ごした1960年代前半の少年時代を思い起こし、そこにあるイメージやサウンドに立ち返りました。隣町Hough Avenueで生まれたファンキーなブルースやモータウンのヒット曲たち。ピアノのレッスンで出会ったベートーベンやバルトークの音楽も鮮やかに思い返されます。何より、私の通っていた教会には、イギリスやドイツの崇高な賛美歌と素朴なフォークソングとが交わった、独特なアメリカ的音楽がありました。一方、教会の外を行き交う車のラジオからは当時の最新デトロイト・ミュージックが流れて来るなど、あらゆる種類の音楽が混在し、日常の隅々に浸透していた世界だったのです。 　私はこのアルバムに全てを込めようと思いました。「ア・スマイル・イン・ザ・レイン」では、子供が見知らぬ土地へ旅する様子、その期待と不安を描きました。「アナザー・ウェイ・ホーム」の根底には、聖歌と共に、祈りの中で徐々に一体となる人々の姿から受けた印象があります。この曲の着想を得たのは今から20年も前。ようやく完成できた１曲です。「リキッド・ブルー」「ウィンター・ライト」「ザ・チルドレン・プレイ」は、ヨーロッパの印象派とアメリカのモダニズムそれぞれの要素を、ジャズのリズムで包んだもの。「イフ・アンツ・リード・ポエトリー…」は、ニューオーリンズ的グルーブとモダン・ファンクとのコラージュです。この作曲の過程では、「リップル・エフェクト」同様、1980年代に私が自分の音楽を追求する中で重要なキーとなったエレクトリック・ジャズの形にヒントを得ました。 　また、『リキッド・ブルー』は色や質感、ムードについての作品でもあります。私たちが伝えたかった最も大切なものは、決して個々の技術などではありません。全体的な印象です。杉本智和氏、本田珠也氏の計り知れない音楽性や感受性が無ければ、このアルバムが生まれることはなかったでしょう。世界レベルの創造力を持つアーティストであるだけでなく、彼らは私にとって「家族」でもあるのです。このトリオを結成してからの７年間に皆で経験して来た数えきれないほどの変化は、音楽を作り出す歓びとなって私たちを支えてくれました。『リキッド・ブルー』の音楽が、あなたにも歓びをもたらし、あなたの友となりますように。　 　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　（訳：JJazz.Net） 　　　--------------------------------------------------------- （原文） 　　Liquid Blue is my most personal work so far. I have gone back to certain sounds and images I recall as a young boy growing up in Cleveland, Ohio during the early 1960’s. I remember the funky blues and Motown hits of the Hough Avenue neighborhood I lived in; I also vividly recall the music of Beethoven and Bartok that I encountered in my piano lessons. Above all, in the sacred music of the family church within which I was raised, I heard a uniquely American sound that combined rural folk songs with the great hymns of Great Britain and Germany. Outside the church building, cars would drive by with the latest Detroit hits blasting from the radios. It was a world where music of every sort mixed with each other at every level of my life. I have tried to bring all this together in the new CD. “A Smile in the Rain” is a portrayal of a child’s journey to a foreign land, with hints of anticipation and apprehension. “Another Way Home” is an impression of a hymn placed in an organic setting of people gradually gathering for worship. The first sketches of this particular composition date back 20 years; it has taken me this long to finish it. “Liquid Blue,” “Winter Light,” and “The Children Play” use elements of European Impressionism and American Modernism, wrapped in the rhythms of jazz. “If Ants Read Poetry…” is a collage of New Orleans grooves and modern funk. In this composition, as well as with “Ripple Effect,” I also hint at the tradition of electric jazz that was an important part of my musical development in the 1980’s. Above all, this CD is about color, texture, and mood. What is important is the total impression we have tried to convey, and not our individual skills. This CD is possible only because of the immense musicality and sensibilities of my fellow musicians, Tomokazu Sugimoto and Tamaya Honda. Not only are they world-class creative artists, but they are also my family. In the seven years this ensemble has been together, we have gone through tremendous collective changes, and this has been a source of much joy in our music-making. We hope this music also fills you with joy, and serves as your friend and daily companion.
